EXTRA CREDIT #3

 For my last extra credit assignment I decided to listen to the episode called Olivia Rodrigo’s “Driver's License” is a full throttle power ballad. I chose this episode initially because I love Olivia and her music so that piqued my interest. They start out by talking about how Olivia dropped her biggest hit “Driver’s License” when there is usually no new music coming out right before the Grammys. They talk about who Olivia Rodrigo is and where she came from, one of the hosts who had never heard it so it was cool to hear what he had to say with fresh ears. They really try to dive in and see why it was so effective. They talked about how she made the car noises into her song and how that was absolutely genius and then goes onto talk about something so many teenagers dream about, getting their driver's license. They talk about how she introduced a villain “the blonde girl”. They even talk about how there is a lot of drama going on outside the song about who the villain is. She originally had it as a brunette girl, so the plot thickens. They even talk about how she sings this song in a way that just breaks your heart, you believe that she is broken. Then they talk about the line when she says “Guess you didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me” which makes fans want to figure out what this song was written about. I’m not gonna lie I got really invested in this song war haha! So many fans wrote this song from different perspectives…the blonde girl, the ex, and even the driver's license. Then they talk about how ballads are typically slow, but if you put beats over this song you realize that it is not actually that slow. They then talk about how songs are slow sometimes because of the way they are sung. They go through the whole song and just talk about all the things that she does to keep the song going and just little details about the song. This was my top song on Spotify two years ago so I loved learning the tiny details of this song! This podcast was SUPER interesting to me!

    It was insane how this song got so popular so quickly. There was a lot of drama surrounding it, Olivia quickly amassed a fan base that seemed to attack perceived wrongdoers rather than simply support her music. Her first album was very successful, it will be interesting to see what she does next!

Nifty Nine

This week I listened to the song Play That Funky Music by Wild Cherry. This song just instantly reminds me of my dad. He loves this type of music and does his funny little dad dance moves to this song every time it turns on. My favorite thing about my dad is that he loves dance parties, I definitely get that from him. What he loves even more is when this song comes on at a dance party. You already know that he is going to be in the middle of the dance circle pulling out his signature dance moves from high school. It is seriously so fun to watch, my dad is a pretty chill, mellow guy so when he is excited about something you know. This is one of the songs that can get him really excited. EXTRA CREDIT #2

For my second Switched on Pop extra credit assignment I decided to listen to the episode called We *do* talk about Bruno because I love this song and it intrigued me. In this episode they talk about how it is really rare that a Disney song will even make it on the top 100 let alone it gets to be number one, even over the iconic Adele. They go over what the movie is about and tell Bruno’s story and what the song is about. Basically why he is the exiled uncle in the movie. They start out by talking about the piano in the beginning and how it uses syncopated notes and it just makes you want to dance. It is at a slower tempo which makes it seem more mysterious. Lin Manuel who wrote Hamilton, also wrote the music for this movie and he wrote this song in one sitting right after hearing about Bruno. Another reason why they said it could have blown up is because it has lots of different characters singing. Each character has very different styles and kind of mixes it up with their personality....
